Clear River Games has confirmed that the classic action RPG Terranigma will launch on January 14, 2027, for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, Nintendo Switch 2, Nintendo Switch, and PC via Steam. The re-release marks the first official North American release of the 1995 Quintet title, which originally launched in Japan and Europe but never reached North America.
Developed by Quintet and first published by Enix, Terranigma is widely regarded as a standout of its era for the ambitious storytelling and fluid gameplay. The game follows Ark, a mischievous boy living in the Darkside village of Crysta on a hollow Earth divided between the external Lightside and internal Darkside. After opening a forbidden door, Ark sets in motion a chain of events that has him restoring civilization and the balance of the world across multiple stages of evolution. Players explore a vast world and interact with colorful characters brought to life through pixel art designed by renowned manga artist Kamui Fujiwara, who also contributed new key art and feedback for this version.
Combat is real-time and top-down. Ark wields a spear and can chain thrusts, jump attacks, dashes, and other maneuvers with full control over movement. The game blends the depth of traditional RPGs with action, featuring exploration, puzzle-solving, and unforgettable boss encounters. Its soundtrack and themes of creation, destruction, godhood, and humanity have since earned it a place on many all-time classic lists. The 2027 version keeps the original experience while adding quality-of-life improvements. These include a quick magic button, item hot-swap, remappable controls, a rewind function, a music player, a museum mode, customizable high-resolution backgrounds, a CRT filter, and multiple aspect ratios. A new Arranged Mode offers increased magic damage, a mini-map for easier navigation, and the ability to save progress anywhere.
Physical editions will also be available alongside the digital release. Terranigma arrives on January 14, 2027, and can be wishlisted now on Steam.
