Telltale’s Walking Dead Season 3 Will Have Two Playable Protagonists

A few months ago we reported on the status of the third season of Telltale’s critically acclaimed Walking Dead series. In the article, Telltale’s CEO Kevin Bruner said that we would hear more about the game at San Diego Comic Con this year, and while that may still be true, it appears that Telltale couldn’t wait to tease everyone.

During E3 Telltale quietly released a teaser for the upcoming season.

In this little snippet we are given frustratingly few details and a ton of new questions. Why are those walkers marked? Does it have something to do with the Wolves, who recently made an appearance in the AMC show? Who is this strange man with Clem? Where are they, and why is Clem missing a finger?

Most of those questions are going to remain unanswered until we get our hands on the game and find out for ourselves, but Telltale wouldn’t leave fans totally in the dark.

In a post on Telltale’s blog, it was revealed that the man standing next to Clementine is named Javier and players would play as both him and Clementine throughout the story.

As for the plot, this season will continue developing Clementine, says the post. The first season focused on the paternal relationship between Clem and Lee, and the second dealt with Clementine learning to survive on her own. In season three, players will get to choose how she will manage all of the terrible things she has experienced/done.

Strangely, that doesn’t mean that the game will pick up where season two left off. Telltale wants this season to be welcoming to new players, so this season will be a mix between a continuation of the main story and an entirely new one. The post says that the player’s past decisions will carry over but they might not have a major impact on the story.

Players completely new to the Telltale series will be able to jump right in without feeling lost at all, and those familiar with previous seasons will perhaps find some even deeper meaning, as we’ll be working to ensure save file decisions will carry over from the last two games if you’ve played them in the past.

Currently the third season doesn’t have a release date but the end of the trailer said that it would be out sometime this fall. Odds are good that we will a more concrete release window during SDCC, so check back here for more info.
