Target’s Game of Thrones Leak Was a Hoax

Game of Thrones just recently wrapped up its season 7 finale, and that means just one thing: GoT fans are desperate to find something to fill the void until the next season. Recently, it seemed that their prayers had been answered, as a thread on NeoGAF showed a link to Target having accidentally leaked a page for something called “Bethesda: Game of Thrones.” An action-RPG based on the land of Westeros and made by the same people behind the current Elder Scrolls games seems like something any GoT fan would love sink their teeth into.

However, a recent article from Forbes has passed on the sad news that this product listing is actually a hoax. A Target spokesman has come forward to disclaim any excitement before it gets out hand, saying, “This is not a real product–we’re sorry for any confusion.” The link that was being shared on forums could have been a spoofed URL, making it look like an actual Target store page. Clicking on the link on the NeoGAF post now just takes you to the main Target store page.

There also seemed to be another fake Target listing going around, this one claiming to be a Game of Thrones game developed by Rockstar. This one, however, was taken less seriously. As great as Rockstar’s open-world games are, they’ve never shown any desire to go into the high fantasy genre, opting to instead focus on the crime and western genres.

For any big GoT fans left utterly disappointed by this revelation, you should play The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim if you haven’t already. There are even some really great Game of Thrones mods available for the game, including an upcoming adaptation of the current Game of Thrones season.
