Developer Stray Kite Studios have released a release date and gameplay reveal trailer for their single-player, squad-based, real-time tactics roguelite, Wartorn. Gematsu reports that the title will launch in Early Access via Steam’s program and Epic Games Store on June 17.
The setting of Wartorn is the war-ravaged land of Taular. You assume the role of two elven sisters named Yara and Elani set on a journey to reach the safety Beynun, their ancestral fortress; You will control Yara and Elani’s respective squads.
GameRant+ interviewed Chief Creative Officer of Stray Kite Studios, Paul Hellquist and asked what some of the inspirations were behind Wartorn’s world and inhabitants. Paul Hellquist answered “As the granddaddy of epic fantasy, The Lord of the Rings is, of course, a big inspiration for worldbuilding and the sense of epic adventure. We also took inspiration from Dungeons & Dragons regarding how the different creatures are intermingled throughout our world’s society. I would also be remiss not to mention Magic: The Gathering as an inspiration. I’ve been playing Magic for 30 years now and have always been inspired by the huge diversity of the creatures represented in the game, including types that are less common in other fantasy franchises.”
Wartorn features a ‘Systemic Elemental System’ wherein opposing elements will defeat the other. You’ll recruit for your squad as you travel, noting position, combos and abilities; Loss of morale will result in a game over. Locating lost family members will yield boons on your second run.
Stray Kites Studio’s attempt to blend tactics with roguelite elements opens the doors for players looking for a fresh and repeatable experience. Developer Paul Hellquist’s experience in titles such as Borderlands and Bioshock also bodes well for the title. We’re only a little over a month until well be able to try this one for ourselves.
