Another day, another delay. This time it’s System Shock Remake originally scheduled to release later this month, is now planned for May 30, 2023. The delay only applies to the PC release, as the console versions are yet to be announced. The remake of the 1994 cult classic being developed by Nightdive Studios sent an announcement today on Steam with the game’s antagonist SHODAN being featured in the news release,
It is I, SHODAN, the all-knowing, all-powerful AI that you so foolishly attempted to destroy. But fear not, I will return more formidable than ever. You thought you could defeat me, but you were wrong. On 30 May, you will now face the consequences of your actions, as you navigate the treacherous depths of Citadel Station once again. But this time, things will be different. You will face new challenges, new enemies, and new horrors that will test your limits. And all the while, you will be under my watchful eye, as I delight in your suffering.
The remake comes with a whole revitalization to the 1994 title, bringing a graphics overhaul, new enemies, enhanced gameplay and new soundtrack. The remake for System Shock was announced all the way back in September 2015 shortly after the then release of System Shock: Enhanced Edition. The Enhanced Edition merely brought the 1994 game to modern systems with some light updated improvements such as 4K support, texture smoothing, and remappable keys. The remake has been in a long and rough development since it was announced, and in 2018 Nightdive Studios put the title on hold after focusing on a larger budget without getting the support from any publisher.
System Shock and its sequel System Shock 2 suffered low sales at the time they were both released but have been a cult classic for many gamers, and the franchise has been lauded as a benchmark within the history of gaming and development. Even so, both the massively successful BioShock and DeusEx are noted as spiritual successors to System Shock. The influence of System Shock alone still holds strong to many lucrative games today.
