There have been no shortage of survival horror games in recent years, but only a handful have been concerned with maintaining the realism of a survival situation and all that it entails. Green Hell, the upcoming title from Creepyjar, aims to do just that.
Set in the depths of the Amazon rainforest, you arrive with little knowledge of how you got there or what you might be doing. With only a radio and a voice to guide you, you must make your way through the ‘Green Hell’ of the rainforest. Your goal is to survive, but you also have to solve the mystery of why you are here and who is at the other end of the radio.
As I mentioned, the focus of the game is realism in a psychological survival thriller. Not only will you have to source food to keep yourself going, you’ll have to learn to build campfires and traps and shelters to help you along the way.
You also have to be conscious of some things that don’t normally appear in these types of games. Injuries, infections, and parasites all have to be considered as you trek through the greenery. Your psychological state will also be a factor to take into consideration as the isolation and fear of your expedition starts to take its toll.
For a taste of what the game will have to offer, check out the recently released reveal trailer below:
The environments are gorgeously rendered, and the shots of the wounds and parasites on your body are just gross enough to feel realistic. It looks like the game will play heavily on paranoia and fear, particularly at night. It will be interesting to see how things progress as you get better at surviving and work towards solving the mystery.
If that short trailer just isn’t enough for you, you’re actually in luck. The developers also released a 20 minute gameplay video for those who want a more in depth look at just what surviving in this dense jungle will look like.
While a full release of the game may be a while off, Green Hell is expected to be available on Steam Early Access this summer. Keep an eye on the developer’s website and the game’s Steam page for more details.
