Take-Two Interactive’s 2K and BAFTA award-winning game developer Supermassive Games announced on March 17 The Quarry, a narrative-driven teen-horror game where every choice is the difference between life and death. Available for pre-order, the game launches on June 10, 2022, to play on PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One and Windows PC via Steam.
The Quarry features an ensemble of Hollywood stars and celebrities such as David Arquette from the Scream franchise, Modern Family’s Ariel Winter, Justice Smith from Jurassic World, Brenda Song from Dollface, Lance Henriksen from Aliens, Lin Shaye from A Nightmare on Elm Street and more. The premise of the game begins with teenage counselors who are set on celebrating the last day of summer camp in Hackett’s Quarry with no one to watch, and no one watching them. Or so they think.
“The Quarry is breaking new ground across interactive storytelling and technology to create a truly visceral teen-horror experience,” stated Director Will Byles. “I can’t wait to see the choices you make, who you’ll save, and who you’re willing to sacrifice!”
Supermassive Games is an independent game developer with a reputation for innovation in storytelling and is best known for the critically acclaimed PS4 hit Until Dawn. The Quarry may be considered a spiritual successor, with similar gameplay features such as a butterfly effect system where one choice will determine other situations down the line. Every decision, big or small, will determine who lives.
Players will have the option to play as each of 9 different camp counselors as blood-drenched locals and something far more sinister hunts them through the night. The difficulty of the game can be adjusted for players who may need to be nudged along, or for adrenaline junkies who thoroughly enjoy a hair-raising horror experience. If not, The Quarry doubles as a cinematic experience that can be watched rather than played. Cutting-edge facial capture, filmic lighting techniques and the experienced acting performance from the cast brings the game to life.
The Quarry can also be played with up to 7 others in online play. They can spectate and vote on key decisions or play together in a party horror couch co-op experience where everyone picks their own player and controls their actions.
Byles says this new game is on another level compared to his earlier work, according to what he told 9News. “The Quarry is essentially made up of four different genres… but I don’t want to spoil it all”. Byles equates it to something along the lines of the film The Hills Have Eyes. Without much else given away beyond the official announcement trailer, this summer’s M-rated game will be a haunting must-see teen-horror entertainment experience. Pre-ordering the game will result in receiving the Horror History Visual filter Pack, which allows players to tailor the aesthetic of The Quarry to their liking such as Indie Horror, ‘80s Horror and Black-and-White Classic Horror.
