Super Meat Boy Forever Will Have Staggered Release Dates

Super Meat Boy Forever, the auto-running platformer sequel to Super Meat Boy, will be releasing in April 2019. However, this release date only applies to the game’s release on consoles and the Epic Games Store. For those looking to purchase it on Steam, they’ll have to wait another year.

Super Meat Boy Forever is the sequel to the 2010 indie platformer hit Super Meat Boy, which was released back in 2010 by Team Meat (which included Edmund McMillen at the time). The game had players controlling the titular meaty lad as he tries to rescue his girlfriend Bandage Girl from the maniacal Dr. Fetus. In Super Meat Boy Forever, the two lovebirds have a cute little baby girl named Nugget. Unfortunately for them, Dr. Fetus is once again up to no good and has kidnapped their daughter. Now Meat Boy and Bandage Girl have to platform their way through a variety of stages and boss battles to get her back!

Originally conceived as a mobile game, Super Meat Boy Forever uses two buttons to have your character jump and attack enemies as they automatically run through stages. The game requires players to mix together careful leaps with pinpoint timing to get through each stage.

At the Kinda Funny Games Showcase a few days ago, the above trailer for Super Meat Boy Forever debuted. Noticeably, the trailer’s ending didn’t list Steam among the platforms that would be getting the game in 2019. Team Meat co-founder Tommy Refenes explained their team’s reasoning for the move on their official Discord channel. “Super Meat Boy [Forever] is coming to Steam April 2020, a year after it launches,” he said, adding that the Epic Games Store was “desperately needed to get Steam to give a shit.” He clarified their decision:

I understand people don’t like change but…the end result of this will mean better games for people. It maybe more launchers [for players], sure, but a small price to play for a developer community that doesn’t feel like they have one choice on PC. I would have put it on [the Epic Store] eventually anyway and I’m glad to make it exclusive.

This isn’t the only game preferring the Epic Games Store. Hades, the newest game by the creators of Bastion and Pyre, is currently in Early Access exclusively on the Epic Games Store.

Super Meat Boy Forever releases April 2019 on the Epic Games Store, Xbox One, PS4, and Nintendo Switch.
