Super Mario RPG Gets European Re-Release!

Earlier today, Eurogamer broke news with the Super Mario RPG revival on the Wii U. The game was originally put on shelves–yes, physical shelves!–back in 1996 at the end of the SNES’s quiet reign. Both the console and game went so unnoticed, they almost went forgotten entirely by gamers. Due to SNES’s dwindling popularity, the game drifted back into Nintendo’s gaming vault. Over time, the game evolved into an endearingly overlooked classic, praised not only as being a fun, quirky role playing game–one that set a standard for later Mario games–but has also been given the title of one of the best games produced for the SNES.

It has been confirmed that the game, developed by Square (famous for fanatically popular Final Fantasy series, whose RPG mechanics mirror Mario’s) alongside Nintendo, is being given a full port on Wii U’s Virtual Console. The release will take place in just three short days time! Meaning players in the European region can treat themselves to a trip to the Mushroom Kingdom on December 24th–just in time to escape from all the holiday stress, or maybe introduce the adventure to a budding gamer!

I, for one, have many warm memories of this game and its characters, some of whom are solely featured in this particular installment of Mario’s adventure. A handful of fans have been waiting to be reunited with Geno and Mallow.

Sadly, the game is not set for an American release, but we can cross our fingers that this re-vival might be foreshadowing of good things to come. The game is currently priced at €7.99 (approx $8.72 USD). Happy holidays to the lucky fans across the pond!
