After five years go by without seeing it, Capcom finally returned at last week’s State of Play with Pragmata. At Summer Games Fest this past weekend, we got to go hands on with the game for about thirty minutes, and for the short time we got to play it, I would say it has been worth the wait. We saw a very early portion of the game where the two main characters, Hugh and Diana, meet for the first time and start working together to escape the facility they’re in and return to Earth.
The game itself is a third person action shooter. While that sounds like a lot of games, Pragmata is a bit different. Your guns barely do damage to the mechanical enemies you encounter throughout the game. Instead, you must hack the enemies using Diana’s abilities before can really start dealing damage to them. The hacking which is a little slide puzzle similar to those in Bioshock must be completed in real time while Hugh is dodging around the enemies by creating a line from one point to another. The puzzle space differs depending on the enemy you are hacking, and the size of the puzzle can get bigger or smaller.
Then, there are various things in the puzzle that provide different effects if you pass through them while completing it such as a blue piece will increase the duration that an enemy is exposed to damage or a piece we picked up that could be inserted and if we passed through it it would provide an increase in damage dealt to the enemy. As for weapons, you are equipped from the start with a basic pistol that has recharging ammo. Otherwise, you can find weapons throughout, but those weapons have an ammo limit meaning you’ll need to pick up a new weapon once those shots run out.
Overall, Pragmata is shaping up well, and it seems like the five years of silence have really done well for the game as this was pretty much a redebut. It’ll be great to see how the final game once it releases at some point next year.
