During Summer Games Fest, we got to visit SEGA and see the upcoming anime fighter Demon Slayer -Kimetsu no Yaiba- The Hinokami Chronicles 2. As someone who hasn’t read the manga or watched the anime but has seen how beautiful the art style and animation, made me really want to jump into the series.
As for the game, we got to jump in in the midst of Chapter 2 which happens during the series’s Entertainment District arc. I’m unaware as to if the game will go beyond that as the chapter end, and it seems like there is still plenty left in the arc before it ends. The demo had us mostly doing fights, but featured one short section of controlling Inosuke as he runs through a hotel searching for traces of a demon using his sense ability.
Then, there were three separate fights we got to take part in, and you can easily see the evolution of CyberConnect2’s fighting style that they have done since the Naruto Ultimate Ninja Storm series. The fighting is their typical 3D arena based fighting and really shines in the animation department as moves are fluid and have a sense of style that isn’t comparable. The fights we got to take part in were Tanjiro vs Daki, Inosuke (with the characters Zenitsu and Uzui’s wives Suma and Maiko as assist characters) vs the Sash demon, and finally to end the chapter a powered up Tanjiro vs Daki.
Combat itself isn’t too complex making it pretty easy to get a hang of it. Thus, by the final fight I was breezing through with combos and dodging attacks at a constant rate as the moves of the opponents are pretty telegraphed with most of their powerful attacks having a red marker appear around the stage where they will hit.
Overall, Demon Slayer -Kimetsu no Yaiba- The Hinokami Chronicles 2 looks to be another good anime fighter from a developer who has handled these for decades, and is sure to be something fans of the anime or manga will enjoy.
