Summer Games Fest 2023: Mortal Kombat 1 Preview

Summer Games Fest is currently happening right now. Today we got to go to the Warner Brothers booth and go hands on with Mortal Kombat 1 in all its violent glory. Boy oh boy, does this game feel good to play. Mortal Kombat 1 feels incredibly fluid and a metric ton of different combos and things to do you are able to do.

During the demo, we were able to play the Konquest tower mode or local versus. We were able to choose from four main fighters in Sub-Zero, Liu Kang, Kenshi, and Kitana, and then we were able to pair them with one of the three Kameo fighters of Jax, Sonya Blade, and Kano. Since any of the main fighters can be paired with any of Kameo fighters, this gave us a wide variety of combos and playstyles to test out.

All this creates very intense and frenetic matches where characters and abilities are flying all around the screen while the fight is still full of fluid combos to crank out as you tear each other apart. Combos can be extended by your Kameo fighters jumping in and providing an additional move before your main fighter hits another impactful move.

The game is just as brutal and violent as ever. There’s blood and gore galore with intense Fatal Blows, Brutalities, and of course the iconic Fatalities. Each of these can be done with your Kameo fighter joining in to create a duo based move that decimates the opponent.

Visually the game is stunning.  The characters look incredibly good and have fantastic animations. The two stages we got to play on are beautiful and eye catching. All this builds into the presentation of the game to where even the character intros are an intense close up of the two main fighters clashing before splitting apart and the match beginning.

Fans won’t have to wait long to experience the violence of Mortal Kombat 1 as the game is slated for release on September 19 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series S|X, Nintendo Switch, and PC.
