Summer Game Fest 2026: Dual Capcom Previews: Extensive Look at Onimusha: Way of the Sword and a Brief Glimpse of Resident Evil Veronica

At Summer Game Fest this year, we got to visit with Capcom and got to hear about their next two big games. While we technically didn’t see Resident Evil Veronica, we did get to learn about the game. Then, we got an extensive look at and got to go hands on with Onimusha: Way of the Sword. Thus, let’s dive in to what one of the best publishers of the modern era have in store for fans just over the horizon.

Resident Evil Veronica

Revealed at the start of the Summer Game Fest showcase last Friday, Resident Evil Veronica is a remake of the 2000 entry in the franchise Resident Evil – Code: Veronica. The game follows Claire Redfield and Chris Redfield three months after the events of Resident Evil 2. We didn’t get to see the game in action at the event, but did get to learn a few facts about it. The game is being developed by the remake team that handled the remakes of Resident Evil 2 and Resident Evil 4. Then, despite the trailer being in first person, the developers said this will be a solely third person perspective game. They are also looking to give more depth and development to the characters in the game while updating them to modern standards. This includes an update to Clair’s gameplay as she’s been training for three months. However, they want to keep realistic standards for how much progress she could make in that timeframe, so don’t expect a giant leap in gameplay like her Resident Evil 2 counterpart Leon between his first two appearances.

Onimusha: Way of the Sword

We spent the vast majority of the time with Onimusha: Way of the Sword. We saw one demo, and then got to go hands on with a different demo afterwards to get to experience the game firsthand. The demo we saw featured Musashi meeting with the character Okuni and deciding to go eliminate the Genma that have taken over the stage where her Kabuki troupe would perform. The demo gave us a glimpse of the decently sized main map area with loads of icons scattered about. We also got to see a hint at what can be upgraded in the game which includes Musashi’s clothing, his sword, as well as his Oni gauntlet. The demo showed off mostly combat as Musashi took down all sorts of Genma including a newly revealed one that looks like a woman floating in the water but is actually a monsterous fish thing. We also got to see a few of the Oni armaments that allow for devastating damage on enemies.

The other demo we got to play took place a decent way into the game. We were able to explore around a town and trying to  find three stone statues  to reunite them with the rest. While going around town, ! points can appear which is a random citizen being attacked by Genma. Completing these provide a small reward, but you can also fail them which results in the citizen’s death. After reuniting the statues, we found the Genma causing trouble for the town, which honestly had an amazing design being covered in hands. This lead to a pretty challenging boss fight where you had to time your parries and attacks perfectly to widdle down its stamina and land a massive blow on it. For me, it was a boss fight where I came so close to beating it the first try (like two hits away) only to lose and had to try like five more times to beat it. However, this is where Onimusha: Way of the Sword shines though. You learn and master Musashi’s abilities and the slow paced combat and are highly rewarded for it. By the time I was on my final attempt at the boss, I breeezed through it without much issue.

Onimusha: Way of the Sword is right around the corner as it releases on September 25, 2026. Then, Resident Evil Veronica is set to release at some point in 2027.
