Sid Meier’s Civilization VII has been announced. The banner has been on the 2K Games website since earlier this morning, but now the links to the teaser trailer and the wishlist are working. The game’s full reveal and announcement is slated for August 2024, with release in 2025. With this announcement 2K Games has followed through on their promise to announce news on one of their major franchises. If another one appears over the course of Game Fest, it’ll be a delightful surprise.
The Civilization series has a dedicated community, spawned six current mainline games, seven spin off games (Beyond Earth being my personal favorite), and now has a seventh mainline on the way. The latest prior to this one, Civ VI made some substantial changes to the Civ formula. In this case cities were constructed horizontally rather than vertically, a change that is not the most beloved in the series. That being said it still holds very positive reviews on Steam, and until June 21st the base game 95% off putting it at $2.99. The platinum version and anthology versions, both of which contain multiple DLC packs that add new nations and leaders are also on sale: 88% and 91% respectively.
The teaser trailer follows the passage of time as civilizations rise and fall, ending with the space race that serves as the usual conclusion to research oriented routes. Some familiar faces like Cleopatra appeared in the trailer, as well as some of the classic landmarks of the series such as the Pyramids and the Great Wall. If more information comes out about Civilization VII during the course of Game Fest we hope to bring it to you as soon as possible. Until then, a couple of playthroughs of Civ 6, or some of the spin off games, might be an enjoyable way to pass the time.
