In the past week we’ve been blessed with a trailer for Konami’s next installment in the Suikoden franchise, the gacha game Suikoden: STAR LEAP.
What will probably jump out to veteran players of the series in that gameplay trailer are the appearances by major characters from the rest of the franchise. We see Flik and Viktor, who we were already aware were in the game, but we also get our first glimpse of a young Georg Prime alongside Varkas and Sydonia, the Ran Ran sisters, as well as a post-trailer stinger re-introducing Anji. Of course, it’s not all sunshine and rainbows, as the opening seconds of the trailer imply the main character’s father is going to die (as is tradition with Suikoden games).
We also get some short details on STAR LEAP’s combat system, with the turn-based group system making a glorious return, as well as overworld army battles. STAR LEAP being a gacha, naturally lends itself well to these larger party formations. Outside of the 108 Stars of Destiny that you’ll be able to acquire in-story for no additional cost, no doubt players will want to recruit outside of those 108 for series favorites as well as just additional firepower in combat.
Alongside this trailer for STAR LEAP, we were also treated to a teaser for the Suikoden II anime, as well as a release estimate somewhere in 2026:

Between STAR LEAP and this anime, as well as Konami’s movement back into the video game industry, one has to wonder if a new, non-gacha Suikoden might be on the way. Konami is injecting some lifeblood into its gaming franchises (with Silent Hill and Metal Gear also getting recent shots in the arm), it might be old faithful Suikoden to take the opening lineup of Konami’s re-emergence into the gaming market as its center RPG. But until then, please look forward to the Suikoden II anime coming next year, and Suikoden: STAR LEAP, set to release sometime soon!
