Many of you might be too young to remember the Suikoden series (you might not even have been born when the franchise first came out in 1995) but back in the day Suikoden was a very celebrated JRPG series. Focused around recruiting 108 unique characters and building a party around a plethora of unique designs while you traverse a war torn, politically unstable setting was genuinely groundbreaking at the time. And now you zoomers can enjoy these classics too because Suikoden I and Suikoden II are officially getting remastered with Suikoden I & II HD Remaster Gate Rune and Dunan Unification Wars coming THIS WEEK on March 6th, 2025.
These remasters were originally announced in 2022, but have been delayed for a while, thankfully it looks like the wait is finally over. As stated, these games are absolute classics. Suikoden I was a bit rough around the edges but it’s still enjoyable; the crown jewel of the series is Suikoden II however, highly rated with a memorable cast and villain Suikoden II was one of the first JRPGs to really make an impact in the west on the internet. These remasters will allow you to play these classics on modern systems with some quality of life changes, as shown in the video, such as a sped up battle mode (for the tedious fights against lower level enemies any turn based game is going to throw you against) as well as an autosave feature and a mini map.
Suikoden I and II are absolute gems, and hopefully this remaster does well enough to convince Konami, who seem to be moving towards making video games again or at least remasters of them for now, to get Suikoden III, IV, and V remastered too (Suikoden IV especially is rough and could use some love). With the recent tragic passing of the series creator, Yoshitaka Murayama, it’s good to see that his legacy series is not forgotten.
