Believe it or not, but Street Fighter V is still alive and kicking. When it was released back in early 2016, it was considered bit of a disappointment, with a surprising lack of content, as well as no offline arcade mode. If anything, it was looked at more as an Early Access title rather than a full AAA release. Nearly four years later, the game is flourishing on the fighting circuit, and it looks like we’re about to get even more announcements for new content very soon.
During the Brazil Game Show, the game’s producer, Yoshinori Ono, revealed that there will be new tournament costumes that will be free to download sometime in December. In addition, Ono also teased that there will be more information on new content and characters very soon; “Well, about that, we’re going to have new information to present to you in regards to that at the Capcom Cup North American Finals in November, and at Capcom Cup in December, so if you could please just stay patient until then.”
Obviously having more fighters is an easy choice, as Capcom has been throwing in longtime stalwarts, as well as some new faces for each Season Pass. This years started with the infamous Kage, or Evil Ryu with horns, who were then joined by E. Honda, Poison, and Lucia this past Summer. However, hearing Ono talk about more fighters joining the game’s roster is bit surprising. You’d think that at this point, we’d be getting ready for a potential sequel, or at least the next iteration of Street Fighter, although Ono himself debunked those rumors just before EVO 2019.
On top of that, what is this “new content” that Ono is referencing? One possibility is that we’d see a readjustment to some of the fighting mechanics, most notably the V-Trigger system. However, that aspect was one of the game’s biggest selling points, although it’s also been a point of controversy in the fighting game community. Another potential idea is that we’ll see the reintroduction of the Double Combo system, which came from Ultra Street Fighter IV.
Either way, we’re very intrigued to see what Ono and the company has been working on. Who knows, this might keep Street Fighter V going even longer than we originally anticipated. Expect to hear about these and more during the Capcom North American Finals which takes place from November 16-17 at the HyperX Esports Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, and the Capcom Cup from December 13-15 at the NOVO Theater in Los Angeles, CA.
