Still No Date for Kingdom Hearts 3 and Final Fantasy 7 Remake

Fans of Kingdom Hearts have been waiting for a very long time to get a proper sequel to 2005’s Kingdom Hearts II, as well as the much anticipated Final Fantasy VII Remake. While some fans have been holding out hope that at least one of these games would be released sometime this year, recent evidence seems to prove otherwise.

Square Enix recently released an investors document–which found its way on NeoGAF–highlighting some of the publisher’s recent major releases, as well as those expected to be released in 2018 and beyond. While some of these games, including Dragon Quest XI, have a vague “2017” release date, Kingdom Hearts III, Final Fantasy VII Remake, and an upcoming Marvel IP licensed game have no set release date. While Square Enix hasn’t officially announced that these games won’t be released this year, it seems highly unlikely that they will come out any earlier than 2018.

This, of course, doesn’t come as much of a surprise to fans of Square Enix, especially those that have been following news on these two games. Not that long ago, director Tetsuya Nomura essentially confirmed that neither of these games were close enough to being released this year. He did at least seem interested in showing the fans that progress was being made on both games, hinting that something might be shared sometime in 2017:

We didn’t share much information on either of the two titles last year, but I hope to show its progress at some event this year. The release of these titles will still be a while. However, we have many titles releasing this year, and we hope you look forward to any ‘surprises’.

Looks like fans will just have to contend with Kingdom Hearts 2.8 until then, which has already been released and is available for the PlayStation 4.
