Steve Jackson’s “Ogre” Tabletop Game Goes Digital

Steve Jackson Games’ Ogre, the asymmetrical tabletop game based on tank warfare, has been recreated as a turn-based video game.  The new version of the game is the result of a massively successful Kickstarter to revamp the original 1977 tabletop game; the digital version was one of the campaign stretch goals.

The digital Ogre launched on October 5th, and it offers both singleplayer and multiplayer modes. In the game, one player takes control of the Ogre, a giant superpowered tank, and the other is on defense attempting to destroy the Ogre with other instruments of war. The hex-based strategy game features a ten-mission solo campaign and a skirmish mode against the game’s AI. New players can also dip their toes in with a tutorial mode.

Steve Jackson Games’ announcement of the digital game supplied a bit of background for those unfamiliar with Ogre‘s concept, writing, “In the warfare of the near future [2085], one type of unit inspires such fear that even allies keep a safe distance: the Ogre. These AI-powered tanks are so powerful they’re the equivalent of a battalion of tanks and infantry. Hovercraft, tanks, marines, infantry, and the monstrous Ogres all take part in an endless world war. As a player, you take command and vie for supremacy on the irradiated battlefields of the future.”

Ogre is available now on Steam for $24.99. You can check out the trailer below 0r head over to the Steam store here.

Glenn Carreau: Hi! I'm Glenn: recent college grad specializing in interactive arts and media, writer, game creator and connoisseur, pop culture junkie, and semi-professional fan-artist and blogger. In my free time, I function as an unnecessarily specific gaming encyclopedia. I also play the violin, binge crime/detective procedural shows (still not sure why), and do a large amount of digital painting. I'm probably too attached to Dragon Age, but not really inclined to do anything about it. I'm a huge fan of cosplay, foxes, the prose of Jenny Lawson, and Strong Female Characters™.
