Star Wars: Dark Forces Remaster Announced At Gamescom 2023

The classic 1995 Star Wars shooter, Star Wars: Dark Forces is getting a remaster.  A suprise, but a welcomed one.

Announced at Gamescom, Nightdive Studios the developers behind the Quake 2 and System Shock remaster released a trailer for their next retro remaster, 1995’s Star Wars: Dark Forces.

Released 28 years ago in 1995, Star Wars: Dark Forces was a single-player action-adventure game released for PC where players play as Kyle Kattarn, who would become a Jedi in the 1997 sequel, Star Wars: Jedi Dark Forces.  According to IGN, who spoke with Larry Kuperman, the Director of Business and Development at Nightdive, Kuperman says, “I think the audience will appreciate the degree of challenge.”

When looking at the trailer for the remaster of Dark Forces, the cutscenes and gameplay that were shown looked very good.  Nightdive really cleaned up the visuals and cutscenes, staying true to the original from 28 years ago.  As a huge Star Wars fan, I never got the chance to play this title since it released before I was born, so I’m excited to see what this remaster has to offer.

With the use of Nightdive’s in-house Kex engine, this engine allows Nightdive to add modern controls, enhanced graphics, framerate, and resolutions up to 4K for classic remasters.  Kuperman also says to IGN that they want to stay true to the original and “bring back the way you felt when you played the original. “That’s our mission.” He added,

Our mantra is always about preservation. And you don’t preserve things by changing them.

Kuperman also revealed how Dark Forces will be priced which he suggests is around $20-$30.  This price range is not bad at all for a classic remaster.  Along with Star Wars: Dark Forces, Nightdive Studios also announced the remaster for Turok 3: Shadow of Oblivion that originally released in 2000 for the N64.

Currently, there is no release date for the remaster of Star Wars: Dark Forces, but when it is released, it will be ported to PS5, PS4, Xbox Series, Xbox One, PC, and Switch.
