Aspyr, the developer of the just-released Star Wars: Battlefront Classic Collection, has issued a statement responding to criticisms about the online play and lack of servers at launch on PC.
The game, which released on March 14 and includes the classic Star Wars: Battlefront and Star Wars: Battlefront II, was met with significant backlash to its PC version for poor early online support. It received reviews classified as Overwhelmingly Negative on its Steam page – at the time of writing, 3,885 of 4,161 reviews (around 93%) were Overwhelmingly Negative, with players citing various online aspects that were not up to standard.
According to the reviews, the game launched with only three PC servers for Battlefront II. At 64 players per match, that only allowed for 192 people to play online at the same time. Others claimed that the original Battlefront had no servers available at all, making online play for the game impossible. When players could find a server, many claimed that they were not able to spawn into the match.
In the hours that followed the release, more servers were added, but many players still reported buggy gameplay with significant stuttering and latency issues. Now, the team at Aspyr has addressed the complaints, stating that they are aware of the problems and working on solutions.
“We’d like to thank the Battlefront community for their overwhelming support and feedback for the STAR WARS™ Battlefront Classic Collection release,” they said. “At launch, we experienced critical errors with our network infrastructure. The result was incredibly high ping, matchmaking errors, crashes, and servers not appearing in the browser.”
“Since launch, we’ve been working to address these issues and increase network stability, and we will continue our efforts until our network infrastructure is stabilized to prevent further outages,” they continued. “Please continue to report bugs, errors, or unexpected behaviors to our support team via our Request Form.”
Though it may be possible for the team to sort out the server issues with time, this is a major setback for the reputation of the Classic Collection. It will take significant effort from Aspyr to recover from the ratio of Overwhelmingly Negative reviews so early in the game’s life.
