Star Citizen Surpasses $72 Million in Funding

Cloud Imperium Games’s upcoming space epic Star Citizen has accumulated so much money in crowdfunding that anything short of being one of the greatest videogames in history would be a gross disservice to its many backers.

The game has now achieved $72 million in crowdfunding alone, which is all the more incredible when you consider that only two weeks ago that number stood at $70 million. Nearly 750,000 backers are responsible for this number, and that number is likely to reach a million once the game is officially released sometime in 2016.

Project lead Chris Roberts has previously said that it is likely Star Citizen will achieve $100 million in funding. Addressing the game’s backers, he said: “You guys are literally setting the budget and ambition of the game with your support which in itself is a pretty amazing thing and something I never would have believed possible two years ago.”

Star Citizen is now the most successfully crowdfunded thing, nevermind videogame, in history.

Cloud Imperium have also released a patch for its Arena Commander mode, which features competitive multiplayer that is separate from the game’s persistent universe. The patch fixes lobby kicking, graphical anomalies, and adds new skins, among other things.
