It’s always a special moment when a video game franchise reaches its silver anniversary, and the Tomb Raider franchise is doing just that. The series is officially 25 years old this week, and the owner of the IP, Square Enix, has decided to celebrate with the launch of brand new website which focuses on the achievements and milestones that Lara Croft and company have made. Square Enix also revealed that they will be bringing both Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light and Lara Croft and the Temple of Osiris to the Nintendo Switch which marks the very first time that Lara will be featured on Nintendo’s current console.
In addition, the company is also making the 2015 entry, Rise of the Tomb Raider, available for PC owners completely free. This is being done via Amazon Prime through Twitch which can be viewed here. You’ll need to have both Amazon Prime and a Twitch account in order to use the promotion in order to get the game for free. The game can be claimed starting next week on November 1 all the way through November 14. It’s also important to note that this is not the 20th Anniversary edition of the title which came out in 2016, only the original 2015 edition.
The first Tomb Raider was originally developed by Core Design and Eidos Interactive, launching in 1996 for the PlayStation, Sega Saturn and PC through MS-DOS. What followed was a plethora of titles on numerous systems, spin-off media franchises, and making one of the most recognizable video game characters of all time in Lara Croft. The series has also since been inducted into the World Video Game Hall of Fame, and will even branch into the world of anime with an official Netflix produced series. What happens to the franchise from here on out is anyone’s guess, but its place in history is firmly cemented.
