Today, Square Enix announced on their website and various social media platforms that they will be teaming up with Marvel Entertainment to work on an Avengers video game, working title The Avengers Project. The game will be developed by some of Square Enix’s subsidiaries: Crystal Dynamics, the developer behind the critically acclaimed Tomb Raider series, and Eidos Montréal, who develop the award-winning Deus Ex series. Jay Ong, the Senior Vice President of Games & Innovation at Marvel Entertainment, stated that he wishes to make “games a key part of the landscape for Marvel storytelling, alongside comics, television and film.”
The trailer for the game teased the inclusion of the Hulk, Thor, Iron Man and Captain America, the four main Avengers from the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Square Enix stated in their announcement that the game “will be packed with all the characters, environments, and iconic moments that have thrilled longtime fans of the franchise.” The game will feature an original story and will serve as the introduction to a number of games based on Marvel superheroes. It will be the beginning of the Marvel Video Game Universe, if you will. Or maybe Marvel Interactive Universe is more catchy.
Square Enix ended the announcement by saying that more information about this series of games will be announced in 2018, but until then fans can join in the conversation using the hashtag #Reassemble. Between this, Kingdom Hearts III and the Final Fantasy VII remake, it looks like Square Enix has their hands full for the next few years.
