Spyro Fan Game Receives Cease And Desist From Activision

In the massively connected world we live in, fan games have become less and less common with companies such as Nintendo and others threatening to take legal action against the creators of these games for using their intellectual property, often causing their cancellation. Spyro: Myths Awaken was a fan game that had been in production since February 2017, being planned for years beforehand due to a lack of any new official titles for the series. Produced as a completely new game with unique assets built just for the project and a new story, the goal was to continue the series in some form, purely out of admiration.

Fans of the series were excited for the release of this fan game, capturing the style of the original series with a small but dedicated team and creating it all in Unity. Made as a sequel to the original trilogy, there was anticipation to see what kind of direction fans would take the story, especially since it was stated that it was in an alternate timeline than the mainline games. Activision, however, was not going to have the fan project continue any longer. The Spyro Reignited Trilogy that had been announced earlier in the year was releasing this November, originally planned for September to fit the 20th anniversary of the series.

Sending a cease and desist letter to the creator, Activision has stopped the production of Spyro: Myths Awaken, also comically misspelling the title of the project. On positive note, according to Eurogamer, the creator of the project, Cyreides, has stated that what was once Spyro: Myths Awaken will live on “as its own thing, with the story, levels, characters, gameplay” and that it is “very much alive”. What this likely means is that the game will see a release, simply with new assets and a new story that has no relation to the Spyro series, its own independent project.
