Yesterday, new information was released about the long awaited sequel to Spelunky, Spelunky 2. The developer Derek Yu took to Twitter to announce that due to the complexity of the various levels in the game, the game will not be able to release in 2019. In a statement about the delay, Yu stated, “As soon as we have a release date for Spelunky 2, we’ll make sure everyone knows! We can’t wait to show you more, although of course the best way is for you to experience it for yourself at launch. All the crazy stuff we’re adding makes me buzz with excitement.” This statement implies that while the team hasn’t finished the game, they are hard at work developing fun levels full of lots of enemies, traps, and obstacles to overcome.
Spelunky was a roguelike game that was released back in 2009 that followed a spelunker exploring a series of caves, fighting monsters, dodging traps, and saving damsels. Spelunky 2 has the same basic formula with several new additions that could spice things up for the game series. The new game follows the adventures of the daughter of the main character as she goes spelunking on the moon. The sequel will contain several new characters available in an online multiplayer mode, mounts, and liquid physics. Each level will also have a second layer that players can go between. The game will also feature destroyable terrain, in other words the player can mess with the level somewhat and according to Yu, “The world breathes more. And then there’s all the expected new areas, items, monsters, and traps. It really is a lot.”
With all this to expect, it appears that Spelunky 2 will be worth the wait. Currently there is no official release date for Spelunky 2 but more information will likely be revealed at a later time.
