E3 2020 is several months away but Sony Interactive Entertainment has already stated they won’t be attending this year’s convention. According to an interview with GamesIndustry.biz, the company has decided to not attend the convention because “we do not feel the vision of E3 2020 is the right venue for what we are focused on this year.” This is the second time in a row that Sony Interactive has decided not to attend E3. The company has stated that instead they will be “participating in hundreds of consumer events across the globe.” Sony also stated that they “have a fantastic line up of titles coming to PlayStation 4, and with the upcoming launch of PlayStation 5, we are truly looking forward to a year of celebration” that will not include E3 2020. Sony didn’t specify which consumer events they would be participating in but it is likely that they will be revealed at a later date. It is not currently unknown how Sony dropping out of E3 2020 will affect the state of E3, but according to research by client support and research coordinator Matt Broitman, E3 is looking to be in “rough shape.”
Our team is hard at work on E3, we look forward to sharing with all who love to play what’s ahead for us. Our artform has consistently been propelled by the cross-section of creativity and technical progress. 2020 is a milestone year in that journey for Team Xbox. #XboxE3 #E32020

While Sony may not be at E3 2020, Xbox has already confirmed that they are going to attend the convention. The head of Xbox Phil Spencer released a message on Twitter confirming that Xbox would be attending E3 2020. In the Tweet, he states that the people at Xbox “look forward to sharing with all who love to play what’s ahead for us.” It is not known exactly what Xbox intends to show at E3 but it is very likely that it has something to do with Xbox Series X. It is also possible that Microsoft intends to use E3 to reveal games coming to their next-gen console Xbox Series X, however none of this can be confirmed.
