Sony Releases New Trailer For No Man’s Sky

Sony released the trailer emphasizing the use of the trade mechanic in the upcoming game No Man’s Sky. The video shows how trading works in the game. The trailer shows a player gather resources and then selling those resources in order to upgrade and enhance items.

Upon first look at the menus in the game, there is a striking resemblance to Destiny. Alex Newhouse of Gamespot notes the similarities between the two games:

If you take a close look at the short glimpses of menus and upgrade systems that the video shows, you can see that they look quite a bit like Destiny’s. It seems that they share a bit of UI design philosophy, such as the transparent cursor used to navigate the menus. I also see some parallels to Destiny in the way that resource management is laid out.

The developer, Hello Games had said several things about the game, one of them being that the planets in No Man’s Sky are actually planet sized. It could take anywhere from hours to days to circumnavigate the planets. In the E3 2015 demo of the game it shows that the planet you’re on is approximately 5 miles in diameter and is expected to grow in the final version. That makes the radius 2.5 which makes the planet have a surface area of 78.5 square miles. That’s nothing to Earth’s surface area of 197 million square miles, but that one planet is larger than popular games like Fallout 4 and Grand Theft Auto V at 43 and 49 square miles respectively. The planet is just smaller than the city of Boston which is 90 square miles.

Past the one planet you’re one in the demo, there are actually 18 quintillion planets in the known Universe. Putting those 18 quintillion planets into game, using a conservative scale for planet size you’ve got a 1 sextillion(1 and 21 zeros) square mile surface area. While the surface area of the game right now is purely speculation, the addition of the 18 quintillion planets makes it as realistic as it can get it.

Trade is the third pillar of four in the game. The trailers for the first two pillars, Explore and Fight have already been released. The fourth pillar, Survive, is upcoming.

No Man’s Sky is set to be released for the PS4 and PC on August 9, according to Gamespot.
