Sony Interactive Entertainment Announces PlayStation Indies Initiative

Sony Interactive Entertainment has announced the PlayStation Indies Initiative that will be headed up by the former head of Sony Worldwide Studios Shuhei Yoshida who left his position in November. At the time, it was said that he would be working on an indie project that turns out to be this new PlayStation Indies initiative. “With PlayStation Indies, we hope to spotlight and support the best of the best indie games being published on PlayStation and the entire indie community as a whole,” Yoshida said. “Our goal is to make PlayStation the best place to develop, find, and play great indie games.” Alongside the announcement of PlayStation Indies, nine new titles were revealed coming to PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 in the future.

The nine games that were revealed include Worms Rumble, Haven, Carto, Recompile, Where the Heart Is, Maquette, F.I.S.T.: Forged in Shadow Torch, Heavenly Bodies, and Creaks.

Speaking about indie games and how they are a big part of the video game industry, Yoshida said “The indie community is increasingly important for the future of the video game industry, as AAA game development has grown so financially demanding that big companies are finding it harder to take risks to invest in new concepts that may or may not work. We trust indie developers with strong vision will continue to bring ideas that have never been tried before, creating whole new genres of games and advancing the art and meaning of video games. PlayStation has always embraced games with completely new concepts, like PaRappa the Rapper, Katamari Damacy, LittleBigPlanet, and Journey, and we look forward to seeing what surprising new ideas will come next!”

As part of this new section of PlayStation, a new indie game will join the  PlayStation Now service every month. Hello Neighbor is the game available for July.
