The most recent earnings report has been released by Sony and gives information about the most recent quarter. This report gave information about how the PS5 has been selling and gives more information about the lifetime sales.
As of December 31, 2021, Sony has announced that the lifetime sales for the PS5 has reached 17.3 million consoles. This total number includes a total of 3.9 million units that were sold in the most recent quarter and do not include the current quarter sales that have yet to be tracked. Although this number has been a significant drop-off from the sales of the PS4 in a similar timeframe, there is one significant reason for why.
In a similar timeframe, the PS4 was sitting at roughly 20 million units sold in total. This number may seem significantly higher than the PS5 but the recent supply chain issues may have the biggest impact for why this occurred. The supply chain stall has resulted in less chips being available for manufacturing and created many sold-out stores. The issue is still ongoing even though the new consoles have been released for a year. Due to these shortages, the PS5 has seen drops in total sales and even expected sales for the coming quarter as well. Recently, Sony has announced a 2 million unit decrease in the expected sales for the 2022 year.
Although there has been a decrease in sales when compared to previous consoles, the PS5 has performed significantly better when compared to the most recent Xbox Series X|S consoles. By the end of the most recent quarter, it has been estimated that the Xbox Series X|S consoles have sold roughly 12 million units. These numbers have been relatively consistent and are expected to remain consistent for the coming year.
While the Play Station 5 may have experienced a slight dip in sales, the future of Sony looks bright as they are heading into 2022!
