It has been a fantastic year for Sony. Following the successful launches of its first-party titles such as God of War and Detroit: Become Human (the former becoming the fast-selling PS4 title to date), the console giant has hit yet another milestone. To celebrate having sold over 500 million units of Playstation consoles, Sony is releasing a limited edition, 2TB Playstation Pro.
At $499.99, this is the most expensive version of the Pro to date, but is the first one to come with 2TB worth of storage. Though, for most gamers and collectors, the extra price tag is justified in its exclusivity. Appropriately, Sony will honor this milestone by only producing 50,000 units of the new variant.
The design of the 500-Million PS4 harkens back to the retro styles of the old days. Sony revealed the new console through a trailer that opens with a montage of the Playstation brand’s building blocks, the very DNA of the industry titan. From the revolutionary PS1 and the universally acclaimed PS2 to the initial struggles of the PS3, Sony’s present-day console is a culmination of all of its past successes and failures; there is no better way to honor this history by styling a PS4 in the classic see-through aesthetic popular in the old Nintendo 64 days. The deep hue of the blue combined with the striking gold logo stylishly combines modern design with timeless nostalgia. Naturally, the controller is translucent as well.
Controller aside, the 500-Million bundle also comes with a vertical stand and a Playstation camera. This is truly a bundle rewarding the passionate gamers that have made the PS4 – at more than 80 million units sold – a smashing success. The trailer even goes as far as directly thanking the fans for their years of support.
The 500-Million PS4 Pro will be available online August 24, and in select retail stores some time in early September. For obvious reasons, Sony has warned that the supplies will be limited, so don’t expect the units to stick around for long.
