President of Sega, Shuji Utsumi recently announced that sales for their action-adventure platformer SONIC X SHADOW GENERATIONS have surpassed two million units sold worldwide; The title combines elements of two titles, SONIC Generations featuring Classic and Modern Sonic as the game’s heroic leads and a new standalone ‘Shadow Generations’ featuring the series titular dark hedgehog with a major role in this year’s Sonic Film.
While SONIC X SHADOW GENERATIONS combines elements of Generations with Shadow Generations, the former is focused on enhancing the original experience. ‘Shadow Generations’ promises a brand new game, wherein players assume the role of Shadow traveling through various environments.
SONIC X SHADOW GENERATIONS is set in a world, where a creature known as the time-eater has created distortions in reality and time, scattering Sonic and his friends in chaos and setting them and Shadow on their respective journeys.
SONIC X SHADOW GENERATIONS features 12 languages; English, Japanese, French, Spanish, German, Italian, Korean, Traditional Chinese, Simplified Chinese, Thai, Spanish(Spain), Russian, Polish, and Portuguese (Brazil). Sonic Team and Sega have aimed to reach the widest possible audience, in tandem with a simultaneous worldwide release; Sega was also involved in large-scale global promotions and exhibits to promote the game worldwide.
Sega has gone on to dub their fiscal year “Fearless: Year of the Shadow” and for good reason, as Shadow’s debut in SONIC X SHADOW GENERATIONS’ sales was not the only milestone achieved this past year. Sonic The Hedgehog 3 featuring a star studded cast featuring the likes of Jim Carrey, Keanu Reeves, Idris Elba and Ben Schwartz has amassed a significant amount in the box office, outpacing major Disney films and eventually grossing 425 million.
The Tokyo based Sega Corporation has had a momentous 2024, things could not be looking brighter for the famed blue hedgehog. With amazing sales in gaming and film production Sega clearly aims to cover all of their bases; A mobile title Sonic Rumble is reportedly on the horizon as well. Fans may be optimistic that Sega is intent on doing the Series and it’s fanbase justice.
