Sonic Frontiers First Free DLC Update Coming March 23

Sonic Frontiers has announced that its first free DLC update will be coming this Thursday, March 23rd. Sega sent out the announcement to fans in an email earlier today and posted screenshots of the update on their Twitter. The update is the first of three, as Sonic Frontiers previously laid out a 2023 roadmap wherein three total DLC updates would be coming to the game. All three of the announced updates would be free to players. The first update coming out this Thursday is titled “Sights, Sounds, and Speed.”

No exact details were given as to what was coming but the roadmap that was previously revealed showed that this first update would bring a jukebox mode, photo mode, and new challenge modes. The jukebox mode will let players pick and choose some of the game’s soundtrack to listen to while exploring the open-world setting. Photo mode is in nearly every game now, letting players pause and manipulate the camera at will, adding in custom filters and poses for Sonic to emote. As well new challenge modes will bring new tasks for players to complete for rewards.

The second DLC update that was announced in the roadmap will celebrate Sonic’s birthday, add an open zone challenge and new Koco. Sonic’s birthday is June 23rd and while there is no date set for the second update, it would be easy to assume this update would coincide near the end of June. The final DLC update of 2023 seems the most content-heavy, bringing new playable characters such as Tails, Knuckles, and Amy which were featured in the roadmap image. Currently, they aren’t playable in Sonic Frontiers so it’ll be a welcome addition. As well the final update of 2023 will introduce a new story scenario.

Sonic Frontiers released in early November last year as a bold new direction for the Sonic series and was the first for the franchise in an open world on five various islands and was a refresh for the franchise into a new generation of gaming.
