Ever since video games were first introduced as a form of entertainment, they have been tied in with other popular forms of media for the time. Historically, this has included game versions or expansions of movies, books, and shows. As short-form content becomes more popular and more and more people gain access to the tools to make it, video games have also begun tying into some video series as well. This was the case when Snaptic was announced last year as a video game version of the popular video channel by the same name. Today, the creator has put out the game’s Kickstarter trailer and campaign, giving fans their first look at how the game is shaping up.
In keeping with the visual style of the channel, the trailer for Snaptic features polygon models reminiscent of old computer programs and static effects reminiscent of old monitors. The main character is a featureless figure from the shorts named Anon with the ability to turn into a marble to traverse areas. On the journey, players will travel through a blocky world stored on an abandoned computer from 2007, complete with glitchy obstacles and a threat to the internet connection that will destroy the characters’ files forever.
The main character’s marble ability is shown to have multiple functions during platforming segments, including clinging to magnetic walls for jumps and extending airtime to reach further areas. In addition to platforming, players will also solve physics-based puzzles that will grow more complex as players discover more programs over the course of their journey. The website also gives the name of the remaining characters in the trailer, including the manager of the laptop, Auralyn, and the mysterious Valence.
As with any Kickstarter campaign, more features have been promised based on goals reached including new areas and voice acting. More information about what the final game will look like will be available when the Kickstarter ends on October 29th.
