Skywind Releases First Development Update in Years

Skywind started out as a conversion mod, and then turned into an ambitious recreation of Morrowind using Skyrim’s Creation Engine. The development team has been quiet on updates for the past three years but the team released a new development video on the 10th of January. The video is a mixture of updates and a request for additional support, though the team hinted at nearing completion.

Capitalizing on a decade’s worth of advancements in technology, Skywind intends on recreating all of the isle of Vvardenfell with new meshes and models. Developers also showed off new character models that sported new rigging giving them smoother animations. Developers claim that only a few more assets need meshes and textures, and then they will finish completing the dungeons.

After demonstrating the magic system along with the spell “levitate,” it was revealed that Skywind will have fully voiced dialogue instead of the text boxes in the 2002 release of Morrowind. The developers claimed that Skywind will feature over 200 voice actors. For comparison, Skyrim featured 70 voice actors and Fallout 4 had 151, including Ron Pearlman who is the narrator for Fallout but isn’t featured as a character during gameplay.

To be able to play Skywind, players will need both Skryim: Special Edition and Morrowind with both DLCs, or the game of the year edition of Morrowind. Skywind will launch through Skyrim: Special Edition and will use Skyrim’s UI over Morrowind’s.

Currently, Skywind does not have a release date or a playable build. Skywind is planned to be a non-commercial release for PC only, as the development team doesn’t have access to Skyrim’s Script Extender for a console port due to copyright barriers.

Going alongside Skywind, a sister development team is working on Skyblivion. Skyblivion is an overhaul mod of Oblivion using the Creation Engine, though that project is yet to get a projected release date as well.

Griffin Gilman: Gaming may very well be half of my personality, so it is only natural that I write about them. The best genre is RPGs, while the best game is Nier Automata. That's not an opinion but a matter of facts.
