This week, Activision announced that 100% of the net proceeds generated from purchases of the “Outback” Pack in their title Call of Duty: Modern Warfare will be donated towards Australian wildlife relief efforts. Renamed the “Outback Relief Pack,” all sales of the pack from January 11th through January 31st will contribute towards the wildfire situation in Australia. Purchases made before yesterday will also be donated, according to Infinity Ward, the game’s developer.
Infinity Ward’s post to Twitter reads: “As part of our efforts to help provide relief towards the devastating bushfires in Australia, we’re donating 100% of Activision’s net proceeds from each purchase of the “Outback” Pack, which we’ve renamed the Outback Relief Pack, across all platforms through January 31st. If you’ve already purchased the Outback Pack, , thank you. Your purchase will count towards donation.” The message continues: “From everyone at Infinity Ward, Call of Duty and Activision, thank you for your consideration. Our hearts go out to all those who have been affected [by the wildfires in Australia].”
The “Outback Relief Pack” includes a “Bushranger” operator’s skin, a Sniper Rifle Charlie legendary weapon blueprint, a charm shaped like a koala, a unique finishing move, and other cosmetic items like stickers and calling cards. The Outback Relief Pack also includes a battle pass tier skip with purchase.
The wildfires in Australia are devastating. So far, experts estimate that approximately 1.5 million acres of land have been negatively affected by the fires. According to a report from NPR, these fires, which are expected to continue burning for months, have led to the destruction of personal property and at least 25 confirmed deaths since January 6th, 2020. The New York Times reports that the Australian wildfires have contributed to the deaths of nearly one billion animals.
Ubisoft Australia opted to directly donate $30,000 to the Australian Red Cross in lieu of creating an in-game purchasable item as it takes “considerable development time” to implement in a situation where immediacy is necessary. Those interested in donating towards the Australian bushfire relief efforts are encouraged to do so through the Australian Red Cross Disaster and Recovery Relief Fund. The Australian Red Cross will forward 100% of funds donated to the people and organizations working tirelessly to combat and contain the fires in Australia every day.
