SIE Says PlayStation 5 Has Sold 20 Million Units Worldwide, Planning Significant Ramp Up In Console Production

Today, Sony Interactive Entertainment says that PlayStation 5 sales have reached 20 million worldwide. Talking to GamesIndustry.biz, Veronica Rogers, SVP, Head of Global Sales And Business Operations said, “We are thrilled to share that Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE) has sold more than 20 million PlayStation 5 consoles globally. SIE also said that they are planning a ‘significant ramp up’ in console production during the remainder of the year.

“To those fans who have yet to get their hands on a console, please know that we are planning on a significant ramp-up in PS5 production this year and we are working endlessly to make sure that PlayStation 5 is available for everyone who wants one,” Rogers said.

When PlayStation 5 was released, it had the biggest launch month in U.S. history. It was also the biggest console launch in United Kingdom’s history. In March last year, the PlayStation 5 became the fastest-selling console in U.S. history in unit & dollar sales. Sony reported that during its first fiscal year, 7.8 million units had been sold.

Veronica Rogers said “Since PS5’s launch, our teams have worked tirelessly to deliver a truly next-gen gaming console that has won the world over and we want to take this time to thank the fans for their support. Your passion for the PlayStation brand is what drives us and what inspires us to innovate new technology, engineer the future of gaming and continue creating the best place to play.”

Yesterday, SIE presented its latest State of Play. This one focused on upcoming third-party games and announced several PlayStation VR2 titles. Some of the notable titles that were shown off include Resident Evil 4, the remake in the same vein as the recent Resident Evil 2 and Resident Evil 3. There is also content being developed for PS VR2 and Resident Evil Village’s entire single-player campaign will be playable on PS VR2. The first gameplay footage was revealed for Horizon Call of the Mountain. Marvel’s Spider-Man Remastered is the next PlayStation Studios title coming to PC. Miles Morales will make its way in the Fall. A new trailer for Final Fantasy XVI was showcased too. The game will be released in Summer 2023.
