She Dreams Elsewhere is a Surreal Adventure JRPG that Look as Weird as it Sounds

Indie developers Studio Zevere announced some time ago that they would be releasing a new game titled She Dreams Elsewhere. The game was described as a ‘surreal adventure JRPG’, and from the trailer, it wasn’t hard to tell. The game was set to release back in the summer of 2018, but delays got the better of it. Instead, it released a full hour long demo a few days back, along with a new trailer for the game combining live-action and some more game play:

This trailer shows off more of that surreal adventure part of the game. It gives lucid, dream-like backgrounds that might cause some eye strain, and make players question if it’s really happening or not.

Well, that’s more concerning to the protagonist, Thalia Sullivan. Thalia is going through a rough time in her life, dealing with mental illness and her self-identity. Her head is swimming with more thoughts than it can contain, so her mind proceeds to no longer contain it, and soon enough her apartment is filled with confusion. And, with a strange and disembodied voice telling her she’s lost, Thalia takes a Sword of Dreams, and begins to start her adventure.

The developers have stated that the story focuses on the main character and her struggles, learning about herself as she fights monsters and meets friends. The game has a unique surreal feel that could be compared to the anime Paprika, which is a psychedelic-thriller. However, there is plenty of humor in this game as well given the image above, so it does know when to not take itself seriously to give a good laugh.

From the hour long game play that was released, She Dreams Elsewhere has shown plenty of promise of what it will be capable of, from its storytelling and its intricate designs to its unique soundtrack. All there is to do is wait for early 2019, when the game is set to release.
