It’s been more than four years now since From Software’s Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice has been available. The title differed greatly from other Soulsborne entries at the time, lacking multiplayer and using different mechanics for a unique experience. The title has since gone on to be considered one of From Software’s greatest entries, and this new tidbit of information only emphasizes this. The studio has announced that Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice has now sold more than 10 million units worldwide, in both the digital and physical aspect.
As we mentioned, the game was very different from the studio’s famous Dark Souls franchise, especially when it came to the player character. Sekiro, the protagonist, was a fixed character that could not be changed, something that was a far cry from previous iterations of Souldborne entries, including Bloodborne. The title is also partially inspired by another well-known stealth franchise, Tenchu, which From Software has also developed for different systems. It is also heavily influenced by medieval Japan, as well as the old traditional tales with demons and mystical creatures.
This is the third time that Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice has made a milestone for reaching specific sales numbers. The first was when it had just released in March 2019, as the title shipped more than two million units within the first ten days of being available. Then it surpassed more than five million units sold in July 2020, before reaching its current mark with 10 million in 2023. The title was critically acclaimed, garnering several awards by the end of the year. It went on to win Game of the Year at The Game Awards 2019, the first From Software title to ever do so, with the more recent and equally acclaimed Elden Ring being the second for the studio.
