The Tokyo Game Show (TGS) is underway this week, with a who’s who of Japanese game developers getting all of their new and existing IP’s ready for us to see. One of the co-hosts of the TGS, Ayana Tsubaki, recently tweeted that Sega would be “the latest information concerning the Yakuza series.” This was interpreted as a potential new entry in the popular Yakuza franchise, which Gematsu reported on at the same time. However, it looks like both Sega and the TGS higher-ups caught wind of this as Tsubaki took down the tweet sometime later.
Later during the Sega Fan Meet-Up event, Tsubaki confirmed that Sega was not going to announce a brand new Yakuza title, stating that she misunderstood the panel’s description. This was also later confirmed by the series producer Masayoshi Yokoyama, stating that the team is currently working on projects for the Yakuza 15th Anniversary, which is more than likely what the updates will be about this Sunday.

While there may be some speculation to how this all came about, it most likely boils down to unfortunate miscommunication between the company and the organizers of the TGS. Still, there’s plenty to get excited about on this, especially since we’re still waiting on the western release of Yakuza: Like a Dragon for this November, and launched earlier this year in Japan. On top of that, Sega also recently announced a new live-action Yakuza movie, which will heavily feature Kazuma Kiryu, the series main protagonist.
As for the actual Sega livestream with the aforementioned Yakuza information, that takes place this Sunday, September 27, and will officially be part of the TGS lineup. It will air at 8:00 pm JST, 7:00 am ET, 4:00 am PT. You can watch it on their YouTube channel here.
