Sega President Says Company is Considering More Sonic Reboots and Remakes

It looks like we could be seeing a whole lot more of the classic Sonic titles coming back. Sega President and COO Yukio Sugino recently spoke with Famitsu, which was translated by Video Game Chronicles, and stated that the company is currently interested in looking at more of the classic titles in their library, specifically with their most famous mascot; Sonic the Hedgehog. Sugino emphasized this by reiterating Sonics’ importance to Sega, which is mainly responsible for the company taking a massive leap forward into the video game market. “Sonic is Sega’s flagship IP, and we are considering reboots and remakes for it in parallel with new titles.”

While revisiting older IPs is an exciting prospect, Sugino also wants to look forward to the future with some newer projects. “Of course, we have to do new things, but not all IPs are the same for new releases and reboots,” Sugino said. Sega already seems to be pushing in the reboot/remake direction as was shown in the Sonic Central 2023 showcase last month. We got a glimpse of both Sonic Superstars and Sonic Origins Plus, both of which are catered more to the old-school Sonic audience with the former being a brand-new entry in the Sonic franchise.

Of course, Sega is also thinking about bigger projects with Sonic, which was more than likely helped by the success of Sonic Frontiers, their latest AAA title in the series. As of this May, Sonic Frontiers has sold more than 3.5 million copies, making it the best-selling 3D Sonic franchise in history. Considering the longevity of the series as a whole, that’s no easy feat. It’ll be interesting to see what Sega has up their sleeves for the blue hedgehog in the foreseeable future. Let’s hope for some classic all-timers to be remade, namely the Sonic Adventure titles from the Dreamcast.
