It looks like Sega has some serious plans in store for their legendary mascot. Tailschannel recently discovered Sonic advertisement for investors in Europe dubbed the Licensing Source Book Europe’s Summer 2020 in which it shows a brief shot of the blue hedgehog and a collage of text to his right. While the majority of these paragraphs are filled with statistical achievements that the franchise has achieved over its lifetime, the interesting part is at the bottom. Headlined with “30th Anniversary, 2021” the paragraph states that the company will have “A year of celebration” for Sonic which will include “new games, digital content, major announcements, and a tailored licensing programme.”
No further information was given or discovered for that matter, so it’s anyone’s guess as to what those new titles will be other than the fact that it will include Sonic in some shape or form. If anything, it’s possible that Sega might re-release some of the blue hedgehogs’ all-time classics, only this time with some of the later 3D titles. Nintendo themselves sent shockwaves throughout the video game industry with their unannounced Nintendo Direct last week that was all about Super Mario Bros. 35th Anniversary, which included the reveal of Super Mario 3D All-Stars which houses three of the most popular games in the franchise’s history.
Let’s also remember that Sega’s famous mascot is going through a bit of a resurgence, which included an extremely successful movie adaption that already has a sequel green-lit for production. A couple of years before that, the franchise released maybe the best Sonic title in years with Sonic Mania, albeit from a third-party studio and not from Sega themselves. Still, the fanbase has grown exponentially, and hopefully, Sega recognizes this and delivers some exciting news for us. We’ll still have to wait until 2021, but our fingers are crossed that it will be worth the wait.
