Recently, we’ve seen a trend of companies releasing mini versions of classic consoles. Nintendo had much success with the NES as well as the SNES Classics. After seeing how fans really took to the these classics, many have speculated that other companies will start releasing classic consoles of their own. Sony is a perfect example of this with the release of their PlayStation Classic console at the end of last year.
Now, Sega has chosen to follow suit as they have officially announced the Sega Genesis Mini. According to Sega, the console will be based on the Model 1 Genesis except it will be about half the size smaller. The company has also revealed that the compact console will have 40 classic titles.
The titles that have confirmed so far are Sonic the Hedgehog, Ecco the Dolphin, Castlevania: Bloodlines, Space Harrier 2, Shining Force, Dr. Robotnik’s Mean Bean Machine, ToeJam & Earl, Comix Zone, Altered Beast, and Gunstar Heroes. As for the rest of the titles, Sega stated that the rest of the games are going to be “announced intermittently over the coming months.”
The ports for these games are being done by M2, a company that has experience emulating previous Sega titles such as Sega Ages and Sega 3D Classics Collection.
The box will contain the Genesis Mini console itself, two replica USB controllers, a USB to Micro-B power cable, a HDMI cable, and a power adapter for those who purchase the The North American version. The Sega Genesis Mini is slated to release September 19 worldwide and Will be available for the cost $79.99
