This year is a special one for Sega as the company is officially celebrating its 60th Anniversary. For those wondering, the company has not actually been making video games for 60 years, as they actually started out as jukebox maker before making the transition to creating arcade machine cabinets. The legacy that the company has left on the video game industry cannot be overstated, especially when it comes to the famous Console Wars they had with Nintendo in the 1990s. Sega is commemorating this by having most of their titles on sale through Steam for PC, but that isn’t the best part. The company has also created a few Sega inspired mini-games for players to pick up for free this week, but they’ll only be available for a limited time.
Each of these titles shares some sort of history with the company, whether it be on their popular Genesis console or in their massive arcade library. The first one is arguably the most intriguing, Golden Axed, which has just one level. This game is in fact sneak peek at a canceled Golden Axe game, Golden Axe: Reborn and this level was the prototype of what would have been a new entry in the series. The second game is Endless Zone, a side-scrolling shooter where you control a spaceship and take down enemy ships. This title is an homage to the wildly popular Fantasy Zone, an arcade game that came out in the 1980s,
The third game is Armor of Heroes, a top-down tank battle game where you move tanks around the map in order to score points and take out opponents. This title is throwback to the classic tank arcade games, but it also uses the art and models from Sega’s Company of Heroes series. Last, but certainly not least is Streets Of Kamurocho, a side-scrolling beat-em-up game that is a complete copy of Sega’s Streets of Rage franchise but with an awesome twist. Instead of playing as the usual fighters, you’ll now control Kazuma Kiryu and Goro Majima, the two main characters from Sega’s Yakuza series.
As we mentioned earlier, all four of these games will be free to own on Steam, starting today, October 15, and will continue through next week until October 19 where they will be removed from Steam completely. Even if you don’t plan on playing it anytime soon, that’s still four, free, unique titles that Sega has been holding onto, and we highly recommend at the very least claiming them and adding to your respective library. In fact, Sega began this process the previous week when they basically gave away arguably one of the most important and popular titles in their entire lineage, Sonic The Hedgehog 2. Sega themselves will be updating their main website, which is linked at the top of this story, for the next 60 days. These updates will consist of livestreams, new content, and other surprises.
