Sea of Thieves, Rare’s live service pirate adventure, is getting a brand new free expansion titled “A Pirate’s Life” which is bringing the character and charm of “Pirates of the Caribbean” into the game. The titular Jack Sparrow himself will be joining player’s crews to accompany them along their adventures fighting Davy Jones and exploring brand new locations.
The expansion picks up after Sparrow finds his way to the Sea of Thieves, but is pursued by Davy Jones himself. Jones may control the destiny of pirates in the Caribbean, but now he intends to take control of the Sea of Thieves as well. It’s up to you to recruit Jack Sparrow into your crew and stop Davy Jones from taking over.
The expansion includes two new environments for players to explore: The Sea of the Damned, where pirates are sent when they die, and The Sunken Kingdom, an underwater area. Each of these places won’t be fully available outside of the added story content, but players will have plenty to explore while they’re visiting since both places contain secrets and treasures galore for pirates who want to go off the beaten path. These areas will also allow co-op, meaning that players can take up to three friends with them to experience all the content this new expansion brings. Creative director Mark Chapman explains how these areas will work in-game below.
When you’re in the Sea of the Damned, you’re in a specific instance, if you will, for you and your crew. So you can go there solo, you can go there with a crew of three other players on a galleon, and it’s just you in that world.
With these new locations also comes new enemies to contend with. On land, players will fight against Ocean Crawlers, which are human-sea creature hybrids that fight as a crew, meaning that pirates will have to fight smart to take them all down. Under the waves, Sirens which fire long-range screams and buff nearby enemies will join the enemy roster, so be sure to take these monsters down quick if you want to keep them from healing their allies. Some Sirens will also be armed with a Trident of Dark Tides, a weapon capable of firing energy blasts. The player can also pick these up after taking down Siren Leaders and use the new weapon for themselves against enemy AI or even other players. Check out the announcement trailer below.
The “A Pirate’s Life” expansion releases June 22nd, 2021 on Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.
