PUBG Mobile Game Returns To India After Being Banned

The super-popular battle royale game PUBG Mobile is returning to India after being banned in September 2020. TechCrunch reports. The app is going to be available for early access in Google Play Store. However, it will be under a new name, that name being Battlegrounds Mobile India. There will also be some changes to the game. For example, there will be green blood and there will also be a new account system.

Now the obvious question here is, why was PUBG Mobile banned in the first place? Well, it was banned along with hundreds of other apps because of connections they had with various Chinese companies. In the case of PUBG Mobile, it was banned due to its major video game investor Tencent. But the PUBG Studio has recently announced that it will relaunch the PUBG Mobile game, and not only relaunch the game, but relaunch it with new features specifically for Indian gamers. These features include color change to blood, and framing the game explicitly as a virtual simulation training ground. Hooray!

The biggest changes in the game may be the ones that are the least obvious. The Indian Government justified the game being banned because it raised questions about the confidentiality of the players’ data, but those changes have been made upon its new release. Also, PUBG Studio said that they are cutting ties with Tencent which has arguably solved the issue.

What does this mean for mobile gaming? Well, in the long run, it may not mean something monumental. But it does illustrate how mobile games demonstrate trial and error, and growth, which is important to the success of any industry. That the success and miscalculation, and mobile games are very quick to spring back from miscalculations, that resilience is what is going to help keep the mobile game world relevant for a long time.
