Everwild, an action-adventure fantasy game developed by Rare and set to be published by Xbox, was cancelled earlier this year. Although the game never made its way to players, in-game images from Everwild have been revealed, granting a glimpse into the state of the game prior to its cancellation.
Everwild was first announced during Microsoft’s 2019 November Inside Xbox presentation. Those excited for the game only received two trailers for Everwild, including the initial announcement trailer. These trailers showcased a fantasy game centered around the player’s interaction with animals and nature as a whole. However, information about the game became scarce as the result of its “reboot” in 2021, per a report from VGC. The reboot was due to a leadership change, namely the departure of creative director Simon Woodroffe and creative designer Gregg Mayles assuming his role. Everwild was then given a tentative release date of 2024.
In July of this year, however, employees at Rare were impacted by Microsoft’s major wave of layoffs, which impacted around 9,100 Microsoft employees. The severity of the layoffs led to the official cancellation of Everwild and a handful of other Xbox projects.

Although the game has been cancelled for multiple months, in-game screenshots of Everwild have begun circling the internet. The images and story was first reported by MP1ST, who claim that they originate from an individual who worked on the game and uploaded these images onto their website. The report also claims that the images reflect the state of Everwild close to its cancellation.
The in-game images match the art-style presented in the game’s trailers, although most of them are centered around the game’s various menus rather than the environment. One image shows an inventory selection screen containing 6 different filters, these being “favorites,” “figments,” “tools,” “mosaics,” “seeds,” and “plants.” Figments appear to be small plant-esque creatures, while mosaics are pieces of mosaic-artwork that players were likely supposed to use as decorations. The existence of distinctive seed and plant sections could allude to a potential gardening mechanic, although the images do not provide enough information about Everwild’s gameplay to confirm or deny these assumptions.
Due to its cancellation, it’s unlikely that the public will hear of the story or gameplay elements that Everwild was supposed to offer. It also remains unclear what projects Rare will begin focusing on in Everwild’s absence.
