Recently, German independent game studio, Rose-Engine, announced that it plans to launch a science fiction terror adventure game, Signalis, on the Steam platform, and they released the very first Signalis trailer on YouTube. Although the release date of Signalis has not yet been said, this trailer reveals that Signalis is a science fiction horror game staging an appealing background story with escape room game mechanics.
According to Rose-Engine’s introduction:
The background story of Signalis narrows a combination thriller like Aliens (1986 to present) & the Residence Evil Franchise (1996 to present). Signalis takes place on an unknown snow-covered planet. Because of spacecraft accidents, our protagonist is Replika Elster, a female technician came to this planet. As the protagonist and her companions explored this unknown planet, she unexpectedly discovers a mysterious alien institute. Along this process, Replika Elster and her companions enter the architectural relics and explore around the institute, but many memories that do not seem to belong to her start to emerge in her mind, whereas the old memories start to conflict against these new memories. Along with the sudden chaotic consciousness caused by the memory conflicts, Replika gradually realizes the truth of a hidden secret about this planet and herself. The goal for players is to help Replika find the reason of her memories conflicting, and fix the spacecraft to get away from this planet.
Based on the trailer, the game mechanic of Signalis are shown as an escape room genre with the camera angle as 30 degrees, an isometric view where the x, y, and z-axis have the same length, most of the time. It creates a unique terror atmosphere with the spectral electronic music haunting around, and light and dark shadows, enhancing the small space sensation on a 2.5D visual. Players will use in-game items to reveal complex storylines and solve puzzles in the way of escape and survival.
As we getting closer and closer to the end of the trailer, it demonstrated the terror and tension through subtle bloody scenes and shows nightmarish monsters eventually. For players who are into themes of Sci-fi horror and escape rooms, Signalis is worthy of the wait.
