Jigsaw is back, and he’s back with a new game as Bloober Team just announced at the Summer Game Fest that Saw: Genesis is the new horror game they are working on, and that it will go into early access with no official release date as of now, but you can sign up for a closed alpha beta.
The game is a brutal 3v1 multiplayer experience: one player will play as the judge, a precursor to Jigsaw, while 3 others fight to survive as Accused. The judge will manipulate maps as the survivors traverse the trial, facing death traps, pressure, and impossible choices. The game also takes place a century before Jigsaw himself, and is set in the grim aftermath of World War 1. During the trials, judges will use intricately engineered rehabilitation traps, forcing players to decide whether to sacrifice body parts or rely on their teammates to save them in time.
SAW: Genesis is built for short, intense matches where no two trials play out the same. Over the course of the game, you’ll experience: Puzzles and dilemmas inspired by the Saw Franchise, procedurally generated levels that allow maximum replayability. The game’s dynamics are unique: the judge controls the games in the shadows, but the accused can find moments to fight back with smart coordination and physical force.
In a press release made by Piotr Babieno, he goes on to talk about the reasoning behind the multiplayer choice: “Multiplayer in the SAW universe is a natural evolution of its core theme – moral choices – now amplified in a shared, unpredictable setting,” and talks about the partnership with Lionsgate:
“We’re excited to collaborate with Lionsgate again, alongside the experienced developers from Anshar Studios, to create something truly unique in the SAW universe. With this ambitious game, psychological tension is driven by player interaction and consequence.”
Erika N. Ewing, Senior Director, Interactive Ventures & Games at Lionsgate, had this to say about the game: “Infused with the psychological horror DNA of Bloober Team and Anshar Studios, the game is designed to evoke a visceral sense of fear that lingers long after each game ends.” Comments like this are exciting to hear, as both companies care not only about IP but also about respecting the horror industry and want to create a great experience for not only gamers but also fans of horror and the franchise.
Saw: Genesis is being developed by Broken Mirror Games, Anshar Studios, and published by Bloober Team. The game will go into early access once it gets a release date, and you can sign up now for the closed alpha beta. The game looks similar to that of Dead by Daylight, and a lot of horror game franchises tend to follow the DBD formula. Still, this game looks like it has its own unique style, and since it’s going into early access before an official release, they can work on the game to make it its own unique thing.
