Rumors of a New Spyro Game Appear After Activision Changes its Social Media Banner

Rumors have started floating around recently about a new Spyro the Dragon game after Activision began changing their social media banners to include Spyro, as reported by Gamerant. Technewstoday also notes that this year is the 25th anniversary of the Spyro franchise, which could be the primary reason why the Activision banner has changed, but that fact only further alludes to the chance of a new Spyro game in the works.

The first Spyro the Dragon game came out in 1998 under the producers Insomniac, becoming one of the pioneering 3D platformers of the time along with games such as Super Mario 64. There were two mainline sequels to come out shortly after the first, the last of which came out in 2000.

Many Spyro games have come out since, but many of them have been spin-offs or hand-held titles. The most recent console release for a completely new Spyro game was back in 2004 with Spyro: A Hero’s Tail. Since then, announcements for Spyro games have been relatively quiet, taking a ten-year hiatus from solo releases starting in 2008. Over this period, Spyro played a large role in the playable roster of the Skylanders series, however, none of those games were a part of the Spyro franchise, he was just another playable character.

That ten-year hiatus ended when Activision stepped in to create Spyro Reignited Trilogy, which was a remaster of the original Spyro trilogy, releasing back in 2018. Since the release of the Spyro Reignited Trilogy, there have been no new Spyro games. The Spyro Reignited Trilogy came out during the year of Spyro’s twentieth anniversary, so it makes sense for another Spyro property to be released for its twenty-fifth. What they might do with the franchise is still currently unknown, but the addition of Spyro in the Activision social media banners prove that the purple dragon has not been forgotten and may be primed and ready for a new, upcoming release.
